Current strategies and work around Staff and Board Development include: - Professional development and training opportunities for staff including workshops provided by organizations such as Applied Scholastics and California Tomorrow;
- Professional development and training opportunities for the Board;
- Provide continued Executive coaching and training opportunities for the Executive Director so that the EOBA has knowledgeable leadership. Executive Coaching includes policy development, working with the board of directors, management and leadership training, and other appropriate trainings for operation of the organization. We are currently working with Progressive Research and Training for Action and have only half of the cost funded;
Goals & Outcomes- Past professional development opportunities have allowed staff to development and receive trainings in various areas including empowering youth through diversity and culture (this was a series of trainings provided by California Tomorrow), reading and math tutoring, health and nutrition topics including HIV/ AIDS education and nutrition for kids, arts education for artists, teaching gardening, and a variety of other youth development topics. Staff has taken full advantage of these opportunities and has expressed a keen interest in continuing these trainings. The EOBA is currently seeking funding for professional development trainings for staff that will include a series of trainings through Applied Scholastics, HIFY, California Tomorrow, Art is Education, The Foundation Center, and Compass Point as well as supplemental funding for staff hours to attend trainings and workshops.
- Professional Development opportunities for Board will allow for the continued growth and development of the Board of Directors. The East Bay Community Foundation Youth Development Donor’s Circle granted the EOBA funding to develop organizational strategies to increase the number of members. These strategies included a needs assessment and then creating a board matrix, board manual, new organizational by-laws, and a board of director’s recruitment package. This process increased the board size from four to eleven members. Additional funding is requested for Board professional development to strengthen their capacity and knowledge on such issues as capital development strategies, planning, and implementation, fundraising, and others workshops.
- Executive Coaching for the Executive Director has been helpful in assisting the EOBA ED with establishing a productive relationship with the new board of directions. Progressive Research and Training for Action has been selected to provide coaching for the ED because of the history with the organization and relationship with the ED. Objectives and topics for this mentorship include gaining a greater knowledge base in leadership skills, management strategies, build relationships with internal and external stakeholders including the Board of Directors, supervision techniques, fiscal management and oversight, youth development strategies, political involvement. It is designed for the following purposes: For the ED to assume a more effective role in the organization; Assist the ED to improve leadership skills; Assist the ED to effectively manage the current change and organizational transition and: Assist the ED to develop a strategy that will consist of true leadership transition between the ED and Founding ED. This mentorship is for a total of 100 hours over the next several months.
