The EOBA Smartmoves Program is interested in expanding our “Gardening and Exercise for a Strong and Healthy Life” project with BANPAC funding. Our current staff for this project includes a part-time gardener and a trained chef.  The Smartmoves Program has begun to dig deeper into the issues of health and nutrition of youth. We offer a bi-weekly nutritional cooking class taught by a nutritionist and aspiring chef. An experienced garden instructor works with youth in the garden where we focus on getting youth to take vegetables home to their families. We also currently sponsor the East Oakland Farmers Market in which our youth have access to organic farmers and often sell some of our own vegetables to raise money for the program. Additionally, we also partner with the Alameda County Community Food Bank as a Congregate Food Agency Program and Emergency Food Box Program whom provides us with free healthy food boxes to the families of our youth participants and drop in community members. Through these programs, EOBA Smartmoves serves an additional 100-150 adults and 200 children per month.
